Camp power, solar and lighting

A fridge can change the whole power setup. We added a second battery to our 4Runner, then solar to help keep it charged. Start with your loads before choosing a battery or panel.

First question
What load are you running, for how long, and how will you recharge it?

Portable solar panel leaned against the windshield of our 4Runner

Our RIVER Pro and work fridge

We’ve had our original EcoFlow RIVER Pro for years. We charge it from the truck and from solar, and use it to power our Dometic CFX3 45 work fridge.

In our use, the fridge is quiet and keeps food cold. It’s a useful size for long, hot workdays, but it may be a little big for our work truck. Before buying a similar setup, check the fridge and battery footprint together, with room to reach your food and the connections.

Our RIVER Pro is a different model from the RIVER 3 Plus compared below. We haven’t measured this setup’s daily energy use or runtime. Start with the daily-energy example for the power decision, and the packing checklist for where the equipment will go.

A small battery or more stored energy?

Compare stored energy and carrying weight, then check your loads before estimating runtime. We have not tested either unit.

  • Product comparison

    EcoFlow RIVER 3 Plus →

286 Wh battery capacity, according to EcoFlow

You want a portable battery for modest loads rather than wiring a second vehicle battery.

  • Product comparison

    BLUETTI AC70 →

768 Wh battery capacity, according to BLUETTI

You already own an AC70 or are evaluating verified remaining exact-model retailer stock. The discontinued US direct listing is not a current buying recommendation.

LANDER camp lanterns

Our lights, with current Cairn XL details

Lanterns and a headlamp laid out together
Our LANDER lighting kit, from the July 2020 post.

From our setup

A friend gave us the XL lantern. Our July 2020 post mentions the red night mode and a magnet added to one light. We liked having light above the kitchen, but have not confirmed the exact versions or which one we modified.

Details that affect the fit

  • Current Cairn XL listing: 350 lumens and a 10,000 mAh power bank
  • Current charging ports: USB-C with 18W PD and USB-A rated at 2.4A
  • The current listing describes a hanging tether and an IP65 rating; it is not an immersion rating

Consider it when: You want a rechargeable lantern above the cooking area, with a power-bank function to compare.

Keep in mind: Our older versions are unconfirmed. The listed power-bank capacity is not a promise of delivered phone charges or bright-light runtime.

Before you choose: Check the hanging position, charging cable and desired light mode. Sharing one battery between lighting and phone charging means planning for both uses.

How do I estimate a day of fridge power?

Start with measured energy use over a representative day, if available. For a planning example only, a fridge averaging 20 W over 24 hours would use 480 Wh. If you assume 80% of nominal battery capacity is available to that load, 480 ÷ 0.8 gives a 600 Wh planning target before phones, lights or reserve. Both 20 W and 80% are illustrative assumptions, not our measurements or either power station’s tested efficiency. Fridge cycling, weather, settings and the AC or DC connection change the result. Plan how to recharge as well as what to carry. RIVER 3 Plus’s listed 286 Wh is below this example target; AC70’s 768 Wh is above it, before accounting for your other loads and reserve.

Does a 65 Ah battery tell me how long my fridge will run?

Not by itself. The current ODYSSEY rating is at the 20-hour rate. A runtime estimate also needs the fridge load, usable battery capacity, conditions and charging plan. Our archive does not contain a controlled runtime test.

Is a SmartShunt a battery or a charger?

It is a monitor. The current range provides Bluetooth and VE.Direct connections to observe a battery system. Its 500A/50mV label does not describe the safe current rating of all the cables and protection in an installation.

Can one lantern cover lighting and phone charging?

A lantern with a power-bank function can combine those jobs, but they share stored energy. The current Cairn XL lists a 10,000 mAh power bank; that figure does not establish delivered charge, brightness or runtime for our older lantern.

How should I compare RIVER 3 Plus and AC70 for my actual load?

List the equipment, its input requirements and when it runs. The current RIVER 3 Plus lists 286Wh and 600W rated AC output; AC70 lists 768Wh and 1,000W. Watt-hours describe stored energy and watts describe output capability. Neither figure is a delivered-runtime promise. We have not used these two models, and our older RIVER Pro experience does not test either one. The AC70 US direct listing is marked discontinued, with buying disabled as checked October 22, 2026. Verify remaining exact-model retailer stock separately.

Will a higher solar-input rating recharge my battery faster at camp?

RIVER 3 Plus lists up to 220W solar input and AC70 up to 500W. Those are input limits, not expected field output. Check compatible panel voltage, current and cables, then consider shade, available daylight and the energy used while charging. Plan an alternative recharge route when conditions cannot support the load; we have no side-by-side solar or fridge-runtime measurements.

Is RIVER 3 Plus the same as RIVER Pro or RIVER 2 Pro?

No. This guide compares EcoFlow RIVER 3 Plus with BLUETTI AC70. RIVER Pro, RIVER 2 Pro and BLUETTI EB70 are different models; their specifications and accessories must be checked separately. Match the full model name and US version on the retailer page.

What belongs in the power-system budget?

Compare the station, a compatible charging route, any panel and cables, and the space needed for storage and ventilation. Check appliance input and starting demand against the rated output. A higher-wattage socket will not compensate for too little stored energy, and a large solar-input limit does not guarantee enough daily charging. If ice resupply already works for your trips, keeping an ice cooler may avoid buying a fridge power system at all.
