Holiday gift guide

Camping gifts with years of use behind them.

These five pieces have years of use behind them. We still take the chairs, fire pit, GoTreads and MORRFlate kit camping. The Bubba Rope was a gift from my brother; we lent it back after selling the 4Runner, and he still uses it. Check the recipient’s vehicle and setup before choosing a gift.

Firsthand facts below come from our own recollection, recorded September 25, 2026, and also appear on our gear page. Manufacturer facts are checked separately and dated below.

We do not list prices here, since they change. Check the maker's page linked below for the current price.

Camp fire

Product photo: Outland Living. This is the manufacturer's image of the current Cypress, not a photo of our own fire pit.

Why it works as a gift

We still have the same one, years later. We have not changed anything about it, and it works great. We use it on every camping trip and at home. It's "one of the best buys we've done in a long time."

Who it's for: May suit campers who want a controllable fire without gathering or hauling wood, especially somewhere wood fires are often restricted.

What to know first: Fire rules are set locally and change with the season, so check current restrictions for the destination before lighting any fire, propane included. Outland's product page lists a compatible tank size of 20 lb, and its support article says it does not recommend anything smaller than a 15 lb tank (Outland Living support, accessed September 26, 2026); we have run ours on a standard 20 lb tank, then a smaller one about half that size, and have not recorded how the smaller tank performed.

Seating

Front Runner Expander chairs

Our chair, patched so we could tell it apart from our friends' identical ones.

Why it works as a gift

They fold small enough for our limited cargo space and are comfortable for us, with a cup holder. Years later we still take both chairs everywhere, now in our cab-over camper. Friends who tried ours liked them enough to buy the same chair.

Who it's for: May suit campers with limited cargo space who want a comfortable chair that folds small.

What to know first: One of our two chairs needed a rivet repair a few years in; the repair has held up since. The Front Runner Expander chair is now sold through Dometic.

Recovery

GoTreads traction boards

Our GoTreads boards folded into the recovery case, ready for the next trip.

Why it works as a gift

We use them all the time, even now. They were great for getting out of muddy situations in the 4Runner, and now we also use them to level our truck and get out of muddy situations with our new camper.

Who it's for: May suit campers or overlanders who sometimes get stuck in mud, or who need to level a vehicle or camper at the site.

What to know first: GoTreads sells more than one size and bundle, and our exact pair is unconfirmed, so check which size fits the vehicle before buying.

MORRFlate tire hose kit

Our MORRFlate hoses connected to all four tires on a rocky trail.

Why it works as a gift

It still goes with us everywhere, used on almost every trip. After airing down, we could inflate all four tires much faster than before. We never timed the difference. It worked well enough that everyone else in our group started using ours too.

Who it's for: May suit anyone who airs down tires on the trail and wants to reinflate all four from one kit.

What to know first: It needs its own compressor or air source; the kit does not include one. Confirm the wheelbase reach and your compressor's fitting before buying.

Recovery

Bubba Rope

Why it works as a gift

This one already proved itself as a gift. It was a gift from my brother, and we called it "the best thing ever." We used it to pull other people out, and to pull ourselves out a few times. After we sold the 4Runner, we lent it back to my brother, and he still uses it today.

Who it's for: For someone who needs vehicle recovery equipment and can match the rope’s rating to the vehicle and recovery points.

What to know first: Bubba Rope sells more than one size, rated for different vehicle weights, and our exact model is unconfirmed, so check the maker's page for the size that matches the vehicle it is for.
